It’s That Time

Athens, Georgia.

Population 115, 452.

A small city.

A college town.

My college town.

I chose to do my semester-long documentary project on the place I’ve called home the past three and a half years. It has taken me that long to get out and explore a lot of the places this city has to offer.

Sure, you can easily stay on the University of Georgia campus and be in the college bubble, but this quirky town can teach you so much more than what you can learn in any classroom.

Whether you’re walking through one of the many historic neighborhoods, supporting local businesses, enjoying one of the many sporting events, or roaming the streets of downtown, this environment has a contagious positive vibe that makes you want to be your crazy self.

I will be sad to leave Athens in the Spring, but I know I will be back to visit this great haven full of food, fun, and friends at some point in my life.

Here’s to the good times in this college town.

Research

This week I’ve decided to do some research on the web to find out how others are photographically documenting towns.

I found a site that helps explain a bit more about urban landscape photography. Although this post is mostly about cities, I think that much of the advice given can be tweaked to a town like Athens.

I need to take some of these tips and try to incorporate them in my next blog posts. Also, I need to find more “people of Athens” to photograph because the citizens of a town are really what make it come alive. I will be working on these things in hopes of improving my posts for the upcoming weeks.

The Chapel Bell

The UGA Chapel Bell is an important emblem of North Campus and of the University. Although I have never rung it (I’m waiting for my big graduation exit where I will ring the bell and walk through the Arch!), the bell can be heard for hours after the Dawgs win a big game.
